I'm BAAAAAAACK!

It's been a while, huh?

So I figure it's time to start this whole blogging thing again. Not because I feel like I have anything particularly new or profound to say, but just because I want to.

And I do what I want.

So a few news items; the combination of an oregon casino and chicken grease has rendered my phone almost unworkable; I need a new one. My friend Kari told me she'd send me her old one. Crossing the fingers.

Next month I go on a cruise. To mexico. I'm SO STOKED. And pale. And concerned that those two might end in an epic sunburn.....

I've decided I'm moving out of the country in september. I'm planning on indonesia, but plans could change. I'm going with friend Sara with no h, and I can't freaking WAIT.

It's cold in Utah. And working in a locale close to the lake? NOT the most awesome thing ever. Just sayin. So much icy wind! I feel like I'm back in Chicago.

Anyway, that is the minute long update of my life.

Farewell.

Soldier Hollow Classic

SO!

This past weekend, my friend Kathryn and I went to the Soldier Hollow Classic, a sheepdog championship and in all other ways dog-tastic time. If you're wondering what a sheepdog championship is, check this out:

It doesn't seem like it would be that interesting, but it IS! We watched all kinds of people -women, men, women who looked like men - as they stepped up to the plate and showed what their border collie could do. It was incredible. The most impressive duo was BY FAR Dennis and Jan. They were 2 time national champions, and it showed.

Also, there was a dog-diving competition. All these dogs would be at the end of a platform that led into a pool, and the owner would throw their favorite toy into the water. The dog would run and jump as far as it could to get the toy, and it would be measured. My favorite was the chubby yellow lab who was SO EXCITED TO GET HER TOY that she couldn't wait - the owner had to DRAG her back so she could get a running start.

There was also a dog sledding demonsration by Pawsatch snow dogs.

AND a police dog demonstration. Where the police dogs freaking TACKLED people.

Man, I love dogs.

Anyway, just wanted to share.

Also, I ate navajo fry bread. YUMMM!!!!

An ode to Pie

So. Right now, I am in Oregon, sitting at my friend Stooph's computer, while a marionberry, blueberry, and blackberry lattice-top pie is baking in their oven. And I just had to do a quick ode to pie.

Pie was actually invented in ancient Greece, just like democracy! And, like democracy, pie is a worthwhile pursuit. It used to be the food of the masses, as the crust served as a protection for whatever was being baked inside.

I have seen and heard of many varieties of pie, but never in my life have I seen a pie go so wrong it was inedible. I say this to prove that the simplicity of pie is, after all, one of the things that makes in wonderful.

On a cold night, on a hot day, to celebrate, to mourn, or just because, pie is the way to go.

So as this delectable yumminess warms up and turns into gooey golden wonderfulness, just remember....

It's as easy as pie.

Mormons. Go us.

SO.

My job has led me to realize that there are lots of misconceptions about the church. Which is fine. Any religion is prejudiced and bizarre from the outside. I'm not going to say "we're NORMAL!" because, frankly,

we're not.

If you want to know why people think we're weird, and the REALLY AWESOME misconceptions about us, watch this video:

So here are the top 10 misconceptions, and how we actually believe.

10) We don't believe we get our own planets when we die.

9) We are Christians. We don't belong to the Christian Coalition, but we are Christians, in that we believe in the divinity of Christ.

8)  Women are not forced to get married and make lots of babies and stay home. If women want to do those things, more power to them. It's not a requirement.

7) We don't worship Joseph Smith.

6) We don't do weird or gross things in the temple. It's basically a more in-depth church service. Not that different from what we already know.

5) We aren't a cult. We have free will.

4) Caffeine is not banned. Coffee, tea, tobacco, illegal drugs, and alcohol are. Not caffeine. Thank goodness.

3) We don't practice polyamy. Period. we used to. Don't anymore. Hear something about mormons who have lots of wives and such? Not us.

2) We're not racist. The truth is, we don't know why people of african descent couldn't have the priesthood until 1978. Any mormon who tells you different is flying by the seat of their pants. The bottom line is: we don't know. Also, we dont' believe dark skin is a curse.

1) We don't hate Gays. Anymore than people who support certain legislation hate people of the opposite opinon. OBVIOUSLY, there are some crazies out there who happen to both hate homosexuals and be mormon, but you get crazies in any organization.

Anyway. That is the summary of my wisdom from being a representative of mormon.org.

Dear patrons of mormon.org;

When you call mormon.org to talk to a missionary, please either turn off or turn down your porn. That way we don't have to hear it.

Also, if you want to masturbate while talking to a female phone service representative, call a 1 900 number.

Thank you for your time.

My newest obsession....

Country music.

I know. Random, right?

But It's a legitimate addiction. All day, all night, first thing in my head, last thing out of my mouth.

Here are my current favorites:

(Zax brown band - Knee deep; Josh Turner - Your man; Johnny Cash - I hung my head)

I feel like country music talks about all the things that never get old, and that are never too young. Like rap has a generation, and punk has a generation, and ska has a generation, but country spans everything.

Anyway. Just wanted to share that.

You should share your favorites :) I'm still new to the genre.

About Thai Food

I just have to post something about the deliciousness that is Thai food.

So Thai cooking has 4 major flavors to it. Spicy, sweet, sour, and salty. But the way they get those flavors is very different than how we get those flavors.

I learned this in a cooking class I took in Chiang Mai, where I learned how to make spring rolls, pad thai, Tom Sab (SOOOO GOOOOD), and curry paste and curry. Let me just show you a couple of dishes I had in thailand while I was there.

This was the green curry I made. It was SOOO spicy! Our instructor called peppers "sexy vegetables"

This is called the "welcome snack". It is a leaf, filled with lime, shallot, ginger, coconut, and palm syrup. YUMMY!

My sister made that. I think its called something uw.

My sister made red curry. I think I prefer red curry actually.

Coconut milk soup with chicken.

My pad thai. NEVER in my LIFE did I think it could be that good! I didn't even take a before picture.

Classic fried dish.

Lemon glass soup!
OK. On to the fruit, which legitimately ROCKED my WORLD! First, let me tell you about the Durian. According to wikipedia, a Durian is a fruit that looks like this:
and has a smell that is "strong and penetrating even when the husk is intact. Some people regard the durian as fragrant; others find the aroma overpowering and offensive. The smell evokes reactions from deep appreciation to intense disgust, and has been described variously as almonds, rotten onions, turpentine and gym socks. The odour has led to the fruit's banishment from certain hotels and public transportation in southeast Asia". I got the chance to smell the durian, and it is like a pungent combination of rotting onions, slightly old meat, and detergent.

It was banned from our hotel.

One morning, I woke up with a desire for funnel cake. Instead, I got this - fried pineapple! And it was GOOD. The pineapple in thailand is a totally different fruit from the one here. It is mild, and not acidic, and a whitish yellow color.
THis is called a Rambutan. I loved it. A brit in my group on the tour said it tasted like "slimy nothingness". I told him that was what I looked for in a fruit.
Blended coconut juice, from a young coconut. SO fatty and SO good!
Last, but certainly not least, this is was my lunch the second day on the trek. It was noodles packed in a banana leaf and we use chopsticks our guide cut off of bamboo from the jungle. FREAKING AWESOME!!!

The much awaited thailand pictures post.....

Alright. So here is the post you've all been waiting for... with pictures from thailand! If you want to see them all, visit facebook. I plan to put my favorites here though. And for those of you actually planning on reading this, good luck. I plan to be long winded. :)

SO After a 14.5 hour flight to Guangzhou, a layover, and a 3 hour flight to Bangkok, Debby and I successfully met in the airport. Our hotel was AWESOME. And since we got there in the morning, we headed straight out.

This is what I looked like at that point. TIRED.
So we went to see the sights, and got to ride in this rickety little thing called a tuk tuk.

In bangkok, it looks cloudy all the time, but it is actually a thick layer of pollution. We had good food, saw cool stuff, and it was the most overwhelming of anywhere I've ever been. Here are some examples:

Cool stuff
Students at the Univesity

A Wat

Good Food:

Amazing. We took a day trip to Ayutthaya, which was the old capital. It has amazing ruins:

As well as some pretty cool other stuff:

We then headed up to Chiang Mai. The most interesting part was the trek. We hiked in this jungle:

Swam in this waterfall:

Rode this elephant:

Slept in this hut:
Wore out these shoes :( :
 Ate this fruit:
Pretty awesome. Then we headed down south to Koh Lipe for some sweet island succoring. Here are some samples of photos:

Does anyone remember this post?

Does that last photo bear any resemblance? :) Dream come true.

Not to mention the accomplishing of many life goals. More on that later. As well as more on the food :)

From sunavarnbhumi international

SO. Here I am in the bangkok airport, with the longest 36 hours of my liife in front of me. It is 12:30 local time, and I am tryinng to be onn California timme.... which makes it 10:30 am yesterday morning.... so as youu can imagine, stayinng awake is AWESOME.

I just waanted to do a brief update onn my trip, noow that it is cominng to a close. Ffirst of all, Bangkok is one of the most overwhelminng places i have everr been - in every waay you can imaginne. Iit is loud, annd  big, and smelly, and gorgeous, and liike nothinng I have before seeen. the grand palace is onne of, if not the most brreeathtakinng compoundss i have ever seen. Tthe food is delectable, and never in ,yliifee have I seen eggs with  such big, orange yolks! Ii tasteed a pad thai in bangkok that I swear came straight from heaaven. Tthe smoothies aree increedible, as are the fruits - ramuptom and lychee and mangosteen, oh my!

we headed up to chiang mai, where we weere stayinng inn a "guesst hoouuse", with decidedly more character than  ouur chhain hotel in  bangkokk. Our key had a giant carved elephant attached to it. which Ii loved. Wwe "'trekked", meaning a combinationo of jungle hikinng, waterfall swimminng, elephant riding, as well as sleepinng in a hut in a hiill people villlage and eating lunch out of a banana leaf. Oh and bambooo raftinng. I loved all of it but th hiking - I'm not reaaly a hiker,I've decided. But eatinn freesh fruit under a waterfall? Tthat Ii can do.

afterwards, we headed to the deep south. After a dayy in songkhla, we tookk a taxi to  a boat to go to  the thai island  of ko lipe, which is basically the furthesst souuth youu can go on an island and still  be in thailland. it iis off of thailland's west coast, in the andaman sea, and it was inncredible! aquamarine waters, squeaky soft white sand, beautifull panamanas of the sea, protecteed coral reefs - the whole kit and caboodle. Tthe pictures I haave arre breaathtakinng.

so now Ii just have abbouut 12 more houurs in thiis airport, and then I'm on my way home. I'm super excited to gie people the presents i got them! and if youu didn't get one, no hard feelinngs ok? I did my best: :)

I hope the next few houurs passes smoothly. and i will see youu all soon!

Thailand.... in a coconut shell

So debby and i survived Bangkok.... man was that city intense. Never seeing the sky because of pollution, smelly river.... delicious smoothies! And some pretty shiny buddhist temples.

We also took a day trip to Ayutthaya, which was incredible! We saw all the ruins from when the Burmese sacked the city, and also that face in a tree thing. I got to speak spanish all day because the other 4 people we went with were from spain.... it was really fun.

We are now in chiang mai. and it is AMAZING. I feel like we've gone from a tropical metropolis to the jungle! seriously.... I'm in the jungle people.

All is well, everyone is super nice and almost everyone speaks at least functional english....

I am a happy girl!

PS The food is majestic. Never in my LIFE coujld i have imagined that Pad Thai could be so ridiculously good!

Lots of love!

No this is not a haiku

Other people drive me crazy sometimes.

Imagine the joy of a world all to one's own.

Maybe I'll be a hermit.

I want

People sometimes make you feel guilty for wanting things. That your wants should be swallowed up in helping others. That forgetting who you are should fulfill you in the deepest and most Christian way.

I have one word for those people.

Bullshit.

I do not argue the value of selfless service, or that losing yourself for a greater cause can be the greatest therapy in the world.

But I refuse to cede to the idea that me wanting something makes me evil, or selfish.

So with no apologies, I venture on to the next chapter of my life. And you know what? This time it is all about me. What I want. I’ve given what everyone has asked me to give. I’ve accomplished what everyone has expected me to accomplish. My friend’s and familiy’s expectations have been fulfilled.

And so now?

I want.

I have nothing holding me back. Nothing holding me down. Nothing stopping me from spreading myself thin, from falling in love with as many things and people as possible.

For the first time in a long time, I can wake up in the morning and live my life for me. I can go anywhere, and do anything, and see everything. I can fall in love with the sun as it rises every day, and feel it love me back. I can live my life in color, shooting out turquoise and purple and pink from my fingertips, the ends of my hair.

And so here goes.

I want.

To wake up and be excited to see what the day will bring me.

To live unexpectedly, to fall in love often, to taste and feel and see.

To go places, and live them.

To really accomplish the goals I have.

To never reach my quota of close friends.

To learn something new every day. (How to play the trumpet? How earthworms reproduce?)

To be surrounded by someones, not just anyones.

Someone who can convince me that romance isn’t trite.

Someone who makes me feel calm.

To never try and delay pain with things. But rather to let pain change me.

To never define who I am by what I have, but by who I love.

To live fearlessly.

I guess the point is just those two little words. The ones that make your heart quicken, and your resolve grow stony.

I want.

Why I'm never going on a date again. Ever.

Ok. So I have the most random story. So one of the guys that took me out has turned out to be a COMPLETE PSYCHO. And I do mean psycho. Check it out.

So we had 2 dates, the last of which was not yesterday but the friday before. We went out to dinner, and then we went for a walk. It was super fun. Afterwards, I was kind of excited because I thought he was really nice. Then, every day after that, he called me. Usually I was busy (and uninterested in phone conversations), so I never answered. We planned a date for friday, yesterday. On thursday night, he called again - he bought tickets to go see x-men. While we were on the phone, he was being kind of manipulative - and it freaked me out. basically he told me he loved spending time with me, and I was smart and beautiful and blah blah blah, and I said "thank you". He was like "aren't you going to say it back?"

I was like "no. Here's the thing. I say what I want to say, when I want to say it. And I don't feel like saying that right now."

He got kind of mean, so it freaked me out.

So the next morning, aka yesterday morning, I called him to cancel the date - I was just really weirded out. And he didn't pick up, so I left him a voicemail.

He texted me later, being like "what time did we decide on?"

This is what ensued

me: "did you not get my voicemail?"
him: "no"
me "listen to it"
him "That's so not cool that you let me pay for the tickets"
me "I'm really sorry - I really am. I'm sorry for any inconvenience"
he calls me and leaves a voicemail saying "lets be adults about this, what happened, what did I do wrong, blah blah blah then....

him "that's so not cool. No wonder you're single. You're not even attractive. Just something to pass the time. So are you going to pay me ten bucks?"
me "I really thought i did explain it. I am unwilling to discuss this further. Please don't contact me again"
him "in 3 years you're going to be fat, and this is so not cool. Porker."

So I was at work, and everyone there was like OH MY GOSH. So anyway, I thought it was over, right?

NOPE.

Last night, in the m i8ddle of the night, I got 3 missed calls from 3 numbers I didn't recognize, and 3 texts. This is what they said:

"hey leah I thiknk you;re a little full of yourself. I'm not having a problem at all - I was dating 3 people while I was dating you. Macking all of them actually. I found you the least attractive and just something to do actually. I think it's bullshit that oyu set up a date and expect a guy to pay for it and then you bail IF that is how you roll in california where the boys pay for everything hey that;'s cool. I could care less. You were not a girl I was going to bring home to mamma, she would say "that girl is going to get big and fat, and we don' go for that it my family. Go find a chubby guy to be happily ever after"

"hey chubby stop hididng behind text messages and emails so you didnt' do so well - be a human being actually confront someone. I'm not going to read any more of your little pussy emails. You can't get over the fact that you were wrong. You don't set up a date that costs people moneyand then just bail -and uh not even make it obvious I couldn't even see that text message because I'm not a teenage girl and I don't check my messages 45 times a day. That's cool. you like to hide behind text messages. Next time, ebe a human being and tell them the truth. Like I'm telling you that you talk to much, that you're not attractive, that I was seeing 2 or 3 other girsl who are all hot, fine, and skinny. I hope you enjoy that. Peace out biatch."

"Listen cankles you're getting annoying - send one more message and I'm going to report your little ass because I don't want to hear from you anymore. You're kind of like a liar, which if you were hot it would be okay because hot chicks get away with that crap. But you're not so now you're just annoying the hell out of me. So stop sending messages cankles."

Best part? You read the last message I sent him. Ever. It said not to contact me. So I think he was drunk when he called me. no big deal.

The police said if he calls or texts one more time, that they will go and tell him to stop.

Yeah. I didn't even know people like that existed.

I don't know why, but I'm legitimately freaked out about this. Like, last night, I woke up all in a cold sweat and shaking, scared he was going to show up at my house.

HOLY CRAP! I'M GOING TO THAILAND!

So I just got off the phone with my sister.... and guess what??? Our flights and hotels are booked in thailand! Minus the ones in Bangkok.... they are confusing. And Bangkok is sketchy.

So let me tell you the plan:

I leave LAX on Wednesday, June 22 in the night time, and get to Bangkok, Thailand on the 24th in the morning time.

Debby and I plan to visit the Thonburi canals:

The Grand Palace:

Visit the outdoor market:

And take in a Thai boxing match:

After that, we fly out of Bangkok on the 26th, and arrive in Chiang Mai just a few hours later.

We will sightsee:

And stay in this magnificent hotel:

And go on an ELEPHANT TREK THROUGH THE JUNGLE!!!:

After a healthy 5 days, we will again board a plane, this time to the beach on the Gulf of Siam, in a resort town called Songkhla.

We will stay here:

And see this:

And visit this:

So yeah. That's the idea. Of course, I'm sure there will be plenty of adventures in language, culture and food.

Just had to share that.
